Plain packs

tobacco industry exposed

In December 2011 the Federal Government made it law in Australia, that all tobacco products will be sold in plain packaging from 1 December 2012. This will be a world first.

So why sell tobacco products in plain packaging?

  • Research shows that colourful branding and packaging design makes graphic health warnings on tobacco products less effective;
  • The tobacco industry use their packaging to mislead customers to believe that some products may be less harmful than others;
  • Plain packaging will reduce the attractiveness of the product to adults and young people;
  • Plain packaging will reduce the appeal and desirability of smoking generally.
