Q. Why do people continue to smoke?

FAQs

Answer:

Everyone knows smoking is bad for you, so it makes sense to quit, right? Sure, but for some people it’s not that easy because:

  • they’re addicted to nicotine;

  • they enjoy smoking (they like the taste and the activity);

  • they think it provides stress relief;

  • it give them emotional support (they like smoking when they are happy, sad, frustrated, angry, etc.);

  • it fills in time / stops them from being bored;

  • they believe everyone smokes;

  • it provides them with an opportunity to spend time with family or friends;

  • they think it keeps them thin.

Some of the reasons above such as ‘smoking keeps you thin’ are not even true and all of them are weak compared to the benefits of quitting.
